According to tradition, the parish church of San Martino in Alpe was founded around the year 1000 on the ruins of a pre-existing Roman temple dedicated to the goddess Diana. In the rectory, in fact, several archaeological finds discovered on site and in the surrounding area are preserved. Originally built in the Romanesque style, the church was significantly altered by repeated collapses, restorations, and modifications, eventually becoming an elegant Late Renaissance building with clear Tuscan influences. It is mentioned for the first time in a papal bull issued in 1124 by Pope Callistus II, when it was under the authority of the Abbey of San Benedetto in Alpe. The most recent major restoration followed the 1918 earthquake and took place between 1933 and 1944. In 1936 the façade was redesigned with four gables, three rose windows, and two side portals, and a new square bell tower with a spire was added to replace the previous, very heavy bell gable. San Martino is the patron saint of Premilcuore.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.5″ _module_preset=”default” text_font=”–et_global_body_font|700|||||||” text_text_color=”#000000″ custom_padding=”||10px||false|false” border_width_bottom=”1px” border_color_bottom=”#c4c4c4″ global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”]

Yesterday and today

[/et_pb_text][baie_before_after_image src_before=”https://visitpremilcuore.it/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/pieve-San-Martino-anni-30.jpg” label_before=”Ieri” src_after=”https://visitpremilcuore.it/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/pieve-San-Martino-dopo.jpg” label_after=”Oggi” alt=”Pieve San Maertino oggi” title_text=”pieve San Martino dopo” align=”center” force_fullwidth=”on” _builder_version=”4.27.5″ _module_preset=”default” width=”60%” module_alignment=”center” scroll_scaling_enable=”off” scroll_scaling=”0|50|50|100|100%|112%|100%” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content” sticky_enabled=”0″ width_last_edited=”on|phone” width_tablet=”60%” width_phone=”auto”][/baie_before_after_image][et_pb_text admin_label=”Virtual Tour” module_id=”vt” _builder_version=”4.27.5″ _module_preset=”default” text_font=”–et_global_body_font|700|||||||” text_text_color=”#000000″ custom_padding=”||10px||false|false” border_width_bottom=”1px” border_color_bottom=”#c4c4c4″ global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”]

Virtual Tour

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_code _builder_version=”4.27.5″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][/et_pb_code][et_pb_text disabled_on=”on|on|on” admin_label=”Virtual Tour” module_id=”vt” _builder_version=”4.27.5″ _module_preset=”default” text_font=”–et_global_body_font|700|||||||” text_text_color=”#000000″ custom_padding=”||10px||false|false” border_width_bottom=”1px” border_color_bottom=”#c4c4c4″ disabled=”on” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”]

Accessible Version

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_audio audio=”https://visitpremilcuore.it/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/interno_San_Martino.mp3″ title=”VT SLet’s explore the interior” disabled_on=”on|on|on” _builder_version=”4.27.5″ _module_preset=”default” background_color=”#163B82″ border_radii=”on|12px|12px|12px|12px” disabled=”on” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][/et_pb_audio][et_pb_text disabled_on=”on|on|on” _builder_version=”4.27.5″ _module_preset=”default” disabled=”on” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”]

Audio description

The interior of the church is notably large—37 by 17 meters—exhibiting the spaciousness typical of the Tuscan Renaissance. It has three naves and seven bays supported by eight columns and four square pillars. The naves are divided by seven full-centred arches on each side; the central nave, wider and taller, has a wooden truss roof, while the side aisles feature stone ribbed vaults.

The rectangular apse has a coffered ceiling, a small wooden choir, and a main altar inlaid with 18th-century marble. In contrast with the Romanesque-style columns, we find eight Baroque altars, one of which is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin of Good Counsel—an old confraternity dating back to 1826, although its origins are much earlier, as shown in archival notes from 1641.

Among the painted works on canvas, special mention goes to The Madonna of Mount Carmel in Heaven with Saint John of the Cross and Saint Teresa of Ávila by Jacopo Vignali, a 17th-century painting located in the third chapel belonging to the Boattini della Strada family.

Thanks to its excellent acoustics, the church often hosts musical and choral performances.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_post_nav in_same_term=”on” taxonomy_name=”percorso” _builder_version=”4.27.5″ _module_preset=”default” title_font_size=”18px” locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][/et_pb_post_nav][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

[36
post-332","punto-interesse","type-punto-interesse","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","percorso-places-of-worship
["GET
