Chiesa di San Lorenzo
Audio description
Here we are in front of the Chiesa di San Lorenzo (Church of San Lorenzo)—once just an oratory—located in the heart of Premilcuore.
It has been suggested that the building was originally the castle’s chapel, mentioned in two documents dating as early as 1124 and 1290. The church as we see it today is the result of restorations carried out in 1676, 1750, and finally in 2011. In 1606 the church was so crowded during Lenten sermons that a small door had to be opened on the right side to allow the priest to enter. This little arched doorway was rediscovered during the 2011 restoration, but later covered again.
As you can see, the façade has two pitched roofs, while the bell tower is a small bell gable located on the roof of an adjoining building. The windows are splayed downward in the Etruscan style, a characteristic feature of 18th-century Tuscan taste.
