Ponte Nuovo

Audio description

This is the Ponte Nuovo, which should have at least a late-medieval origin, and in 1514 it was known as the ‘ponte a scanno’, built at a strategic point along the ancient Strada Fiorentina, it collapsed in the mid-sixteenth century and was rebuilt in its present form only around the mid-1600s. In the early 1700s a gualchiera—a fulling mill for processing cloth—was added beside it, along with a grain mill. Today, the two structures have been incorporated into a single building, forming with the bridge a remarkably picturesque ensemble.
